Nehemiah 5:12

What does Nehemiah 5:12 mean?
Nehemiah has just confronted wealthy officials and nobles who were charging interest on loans to their own people during a time of famine, trapping poor families in debt. When confronted, these leaders immediately agree to forgive the debts and return what they've taken, committing to stop the exploitative practice entirely. Nehemiah doesn't just accept their word, though. He calls in priests to oversee an oath ceremony, making this promise sacred and binding before God and the community. This shows both the seriousness of the situation and Nehemiah's wisdom in not relying on good intentions alone. Sometimes healing from injustice requires witnesses and accountability, especially when trust has been broken.
