Nehemiah 3:29
“After them, Zadok the son of Immer made repairs across from his own house. After him, Shemaiah the son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the east gate made repairs.”
What does Nehemiah 3:29 mean?
Nehemiah 3 is essentially a construction roster, listing who rebuilt different sections of Jerusalem's broken wall after the exile. Zadok and Shemaiah are part of this long chain of people—priests, officials, families, and merchants—all pitching in to restore their city's defenses. What's worth noticing here is that Zadok repaired the section right across from his own home. That detail suggests something real about human nature: we tend to care most about what affects us directly. When the work touches your own doorstep, you show up. Whether these people were motivated by duty, fear, community pride, or just practical self-interest, they all contributed something necessary.
