“Above the horse gate, the priests made repairs, everyone across from his own house.”
What does Nehemiah 3:28 mean?
When the wall of Jerusalem was being rebuilt after exile, the work was divided into sections so that everyone had a clear part to complete. Here, the priests who lived near the Horse Gate (an entrance on the eastern side of the city) took responsibility for repairing the section directly across from their own homes. There's something deeply human about this detail: people tend to care most about what affects them and their families directly. By rebuilding opposite their own houses, these priests had every reason to do quality work, knowing they'd live with the results. It also shows how community rebuilding works best when each person takes ownership of their particular corner, making the whole project possible through many small commitments rather than one grand gesture.
