Nehemiah 13:6
“But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king; and after some days I asked leave of the king,”
What does Nehemiah 13:6 mean?
Nehemiah is describing a gap in his presence and leadership in Jerusalem. He had returned to serve the Persian king Artaxerxes for a time, and during his absence, the community he'd worked so hard to rebuild began to slip back into old patterns. When he finally asks permission to return to Jerusalem, it's because he's heard about the spiritual and moral decline that's taken root. This moment shows both the reality of leadership (sometimes you have to step away) and the cost of that absence, setting up the confrontation with corruption that fills the rest of the chapter.
