“So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares camped outside of Jerusalem once or twice.”
What does Nehemiah 13:20 mean?
Nehemiah had just enforced a rule stopping all commerce on the Sabbath, and the merchants weren't going to lose business without a fight. They camped just outside the city walls, hoping to catch customers coming and going, betting that people's desire to buy would overcome their commitment to rest. It's a small but telling detail about human nature: rules get tested, convictions get worn down by convenience, and where there's demand, someone will find a way to supply it. Nehemiah's response to this was to station guards at the gates to turn the merchants away, showing that protecting a day of rest mattered enough to him to actually enforce it, not just announce it.
