Nehemiah 13:18
“Didn’t your fathers do thus, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.””
What does Nehemiah 13:18 mean?
Nehemiah is reminding the people of Jerusalem of a hard lesson their ancestors learned: when they turned away from God's commands, including honoring the Sabbath, God allowed calamity to fall on them and their city. By returning to those same patterns of breaking the Sabbath (in this case, by buying and selling on the holy day), they're repeating the very mistakes that brought judgment before. Nehemiah's words carry both warning and frustration, as if to say, "We've already paid the price for this once. Why are we inviting that suffering again?" There's deep concern here about community choices affecting everyone, not just individuals, and a plea to learn from history rather than repeat it.
