Nehemiah 11:1

The princes of the people lived in Jerusalem. The rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in the other cities.

What does Nehemiah 11:1 mean?

After the walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt, the city needed to be repopulated, so the leaders found themselves facing a practical problem: who would actually live there? Rather than forcing people to move, they used a lottery system where one in every ten households was selected to relocate to Jerusalem, while the others remained in the surrounding towns. This shows how the community shared the responsibility of rebuilding their holy city, even though it meant some families had to leave the comfort of their established homes. It's a humble reminder that restoration sometimes requires sacrifice from all of us, not just from those in leadership.
