Nehemiah 1:1
“The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,”
What does Nehemiah 1:1 mean?
Nehemiah begins his account by identifying himself and setting the scene: he's a man serving in the Persian palace, far from Jerusalem, when something stirs his heart. The specificity of "the twentieth year" and "Shushan the palace" tells us this is an eyewitness account from someone with direct access to power, which makes what happens next all the more striking. Even though Nehemiah held a comfortable, privileged position in the empire, he was about to learn troubling news that would change everything. This opening invites us into the story of someone whose comfortable life was interrupted by a call to something greater.
