What does Matthew 9:37 mean?

Jesus is looking at the crowds around him and expressing something urgent to his followers. He sees so many people spiritually hungry and ready to respond to God's message, but he notices there aren't nearly enough people willing to step in and teach, comfort, or guide them. It's like standing in a field where the crops are ready to be gathered, but you don't have enough hands to do the work. He's inviting his disciples (and by extension, us) to recognize that genuine spiritual need is all around us, and to ask God to move people's hearts to answer that call, whether we're the ones answering or not.
