“Neither do people put new wine into old wine skins, or else the skins would burst, and the wine be spilled, and the skins ruined. No, they put new wine into fresh wine skins, and both are preserved.””
What does Matthew 9:17 mean?
Jesus is using something everyone in his world understood: old leather bottles become brittle and lose their flexibility. When you pour fermenting wine into them, the expanding gases burst the rigid skins, destroying both the wine and the container. New wine needs new, supple skins that can stretch with the pressure. He's talking about spiritual transformation, not literally about wine storage. The old ways of relating to God (rigid rules, empty rituals, keeping people bound up) can't hold what Jesus is bringing. His message of grace, forgiveness, and genuine relationship needs room to work and grow. If you try to squeeze it into the old rigid system, everything breaks. There's something hopeful here beneath the warning. Jesus isn't saying people are ruined beyond repair. He's saying that real transformation requires flexibility and openness. Sometimes letting go of how things have always been done, even when it feels risky, is exactly what creates space for something alive and renewing to flourish.
