“No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch would tear away from the garment, and a worse hole is made.”
What does Matthew 9:16 mean?
Jesus is using a picture anyone in his time would understand: if you try to patch an old, worn garment with brand new cloth that hasn't been shrunk yet, the patch will actually make things worse. When you wash the new cloth, it shrinks and pulls away from the old material, tearing a bigger hole than you started with. He's making a point about his new way of living and teaching. You can't just add pieces of it onto an old life without real change, the same way you can't just patch an old system with something completely new. Real transformation requires letting the old and new work together properly, not forcing them to coexist in ways that tear you apart. Sometimes growth means accepting that fundamental change can't be rushed or half-done.
