What does Matthew 9:12 mean?

Jesus is responding to religious leaders who complained that he ate with tax collectors and other people considered sinners. He's saying something fairly obvious on the surface, but it cuts right to the heart of judgment: a doctor goes where the sick are, not where the healthy are. That's their job. He's gently pointing out that if he came to help people who recognize their need for God's healing and forgiveness, then of course he'd spend time with people who knew something was wrong in their lives. The religious leaders were essentially criticizing him for doing exactly what he came to do. There's a quiet challenge buried here too, asking us whether we see ourselves as healthy or sick, self-sufficient or in need of help.
