What does Matthew 8:5 mean?

A Roman military officer approaches Jesus with a request, and what's striking here is that a man of his rank and background would seek help from a Jewish teacher at all. Centurions held real authority in the occupying army, so this person had status and resources, yet he humbles himself by coming directly to Jesus. The fact that he initiates the conversation shows he's desperate enough to set aside pride and cultural barriers, which tells us something important was troubling him. In the verses that follow, we'll discover why he came and what Jesus says about his remarkable faith.
