What does Matthew 8:22 mean?
A man asked Jesus if he could delay following him until after his father died and was buried, which was a significant family obligation in Jewish culture. Jesus's response sounds harsh at first, but he's making a spiritual point: spiritual death matters more than physical arrangements, and allegiance to him takes priority over even deeply important duties. This doesn't mean Jesus dismisses family responsibilities or that we should neglect our loved ones. Rather, he's challenging this particular disciple to recognize what's most urgent in his life. Sometimes we use legitimate concerns as reasons to postpone the most important thing, and Jesus invites us to get our priorities straight.
