What does Matthew 6:31 mean?

Jesus speaks here to people who knew real hunger and uncertainty about basic survival, so this isn't dismissing legitimate concerns as silly. Rather, he's addressing the anxious, obsessive thinking that loops endlessly over "what-ifs" without leading anywhere helpful. That kind of worry steals your peace and energy without actually putting food on the table or clothes on your back. The encouragement is to notice when anxiety has shifted from practical problem-solving into spinning worry, and to gently redirect your mind. What comes next in Matthew makes the fuller point: Jesus invites us to trust that the God who feeds birds and clothes wildflowers cares about our real needs. This doesn't mean ignoring your responsibilities, but rather holding them with open hands instead of white-knuckled fear.
