What does Matthew 6:3 mean?
Jesus is inviting you into a kind of wholehearted generosity where you're not performing good deeds for an audience or to feel good about yourself. When you help someone, the point isn't to broadcast it or keep a mental ledger of your kindness, but simply to ease their burden because they need help. This doesn't mean being secretive in a paranoid way, but rather checking your own heart: are you giving because someone genuinely needs it, or because you want to look generous? The hidden reward Jesus promises in the verse that follows isn't about getting credit later, but about the deep peace that comes from pure-hearted action.
