Matthew 6:25

Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

What does Matthew 6:25 mean?

Jesus is inviting you to step back from the endless worry about whether you'll have enough to survive. He's not saying these things don't matter or that you shouldn't plan reasonably, but rather that obsessive anxiety about food and clothing crowds out something deeper: the reality that your life itself, and your worth, are so much bigger than what you consume or wear. There's a gentle logic here that runs counter to what anxiety whispers to us. When worry takes over, we feel like securing the next meal or outfit is what determines whether we'll be okay. Jesus is saying that's backward. Your life has value and purpose beyond these basics, and treating them as the whole story actually shrinks how you see yourself. He wants you to remember that you are more than your circumstances, even (and especially) during seasons when those circumstances feel shaky. This doesn't mean disregarding real need or responsibility, but it does mean you don't have to carry the weight of proving your existence through endless provision-seeking. There's space to trust, to rest, and to recognize that what makes you truly alive goes far deeper than any material thing.
