Matthew 6:23
“But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”
What does Matthew 6:23 mean?
Jesus is talking about what happens when our inner vision becomes twisted or corrupted. An "evil eye" in his teaching means a gaze that's focused on harmful things, jealousy, greed, or self-centeredness instead of what's good and true. When that becomes our default way of seeing the world, it colors everything we do and think, filling our whole life with spiritual darkness. The second part drives home how serious this is: if the very thing meant to guide us (our light, our sense of right and wrong) has itself become distorted, we've lost our compass entirely. We're left stumbling in confusion. Jesus isn't being harsh here, but honest about a real danger. When we let our hearts become focused on the wrong things, we don't just miss a few good moments, we lose our bearings for living at all.
