What does Matthew 5:7 mean?

When Jesus says the merciful are blessed, he's pointing to something beautifully reciprocal about how mercy works in the world. Showing compassion to others, especially when they don't deserve it or can't repay you, creates an environment where you're also treated with kindness when you need it most. This isn't a transaction or a way to earn God's favor, but rather an observation that the generous spirit we extend to others tends to come back to us in our own times of struggle and failure. Living with mercy softens us and opens us to receiving the grace we all desperately need.
