What does Matthew 5:35 mean?
Jesus is teaching his followers not to swear by earthly things when making promises, because those things ultimately belong to God and reflect his greatness. When he calls the earth God's footstool and Jerusalem God's city, he's reminding us that everything we see around us, no matter how solid or important it seems, is under God's authority and care. The deeper point is about honesty itself: if we truly recognize that God owns everything and sees everything, we won't need to invoke sacred oaths to prove we're telling the truth. Our word should simply be trustworthy because we live aware of God's presence and judgment. It's an invitation to a kind of integrity that comes from reverence, not from trying to convince others through grand promises.
