What does Matthew 5:33 mean?
Jesus is referencing the Old Testament teaching about keeping promises made to God. The ancient law wasn't against making vows themselves; it was against breaking them or lying about them, and it emphasized that when you do make a vow to God, you need to follow through. Jesus is setting up this teaching so he can go deeper in the next verses, pushing his listeners beyond just "don't break your promises" toward something more foundational: living with such integrity that your word is trustworthy all the time, not just in formal vows. He's pointing out that if we're already supposed to be honest about the big promises, shouldn't we be honest in our everyday speech too?
