What does Matthew 5:32 mean?
Jesus is addressing a hard reality about divorce in his time and ours: when a man divorces his wife without legitimate cause, he's essentially forcing her into a position where remarriage looks like adultery, since she's still bound in God's eyes. The single exception he names is sexual immorality, which broke the covenant foundation of marriage itself. What makes this teaching so striking is that Jesus is actually protecting women by refusing to treat divorce as a casual, consequence-free choice. In that culture, men could dismiss wives easily, leaving them destitute and socially ruined. He's saying that casual dismissal isn't neutral, it carries real moral weight.
