What does Matthew 5:20 mean?
Jesus is challenging his listeners to move beyond outward rule-following into genuine transformation of the heart. The scribes and Pharisees were respected for their strict observance of religious laws, but Jesus saw that they often missed the deeper point: real righteousness comes from actually loving God and others, not just checking boxes. He's saying that surface obedience without inner change isn't what God is looking for, and without that deeper shift in who we are, we miss out on genuine connection with God's kingdom. For those of us who struggle with guilt or feel like we're never "good enough," this is actually freeing news: God cares less about your perfect performance and more about whether you're becoming more loving, more honest, more humble.
