Matthew 5:19
“Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.”
What does Matthew 5:19 mean?
Jesus is talking about the importance of living out what we believe and helping others do the same. Breaking even the smallest commandment and encouraging others to do likewise puts us on the margins of God's kingdom, while actually following through on what we know is right and guiding others toward it brings us closer to God's heart and purpose. This isn't about perfection or earning God's love—it's about integrity. There's something deeply human about the gap between what we say matters and how we actually live. Jesus is saying that consistency and genuine devotion count, especially when we're influencing people around us. If we claim to follow God while dismissing his values, or if we make it easy for others to do the same, we've missed the point entirely. The promise is the opposite: when our actions match our beliefs and we help others move toward faithfulness too, we become part of something truly great in God's sight.
