What does Matthew 5:15 mean?
Jesus is using the everyday image of a lamp in a first-century home to talk about how we live out our faith. In those days, a small oil lamp was precious and necessary for light, so of course no one would cover it with a basket and waste its glow. He's saying that when we've encountered God's love and truth, hiding it away doesn't make sense, just like smothering a light source defeats its purpose. The real invitation here is gentler than it might sound at first. He's not commanding you to be loud or perform your faith for others. He's simply saying that a life shaped by God naturally radiates something real, something that gives light to people around you. Your kindness, your peace during hard times, your forgiveness, your hope, your integrity, your questions and struggles too - these things have a way of shining without you having to announce them. When you live authentically from what matters most, people notice, and it matters to them.
