What does Matthew 4:10 mean?
When Jesus speaks this line, he's in the wilderness after forty days of fasting, exhausted and vulnerable. Satan has just offered him all the world's kingdoms if he'll simply bow down and worship him instead of God. Jesus responds not with argument, but with scripture, cutting straight to what matters: our loyalty belongs to God alone, and no shortcut or compromise is worth trading that away. The quote Jesus uses comes from Deuteronomy, Moses reminding Israel of their foundational commitment. It's a powerful reminder that divided devotion doesn't actually work. When we try to serve two masters, we end up fracturing ourselves. Jesus shows us that even in moments of real temptation, when the cost of staying faithful feels impossibly high, we can anchor ourselves in what we know to be true about God.
