What does Matthew 3:14 mean?
John the Baptist is expressing something profoundly honest here: he recognizes Jesus as the one with greater authority and spiritual power, so he's confused about why Jesus would ask to be baptized by him. In Jewish practice, baptism was for repentance and cleansing, which made John uncomfortable performing it for someone he understood to be sinless and superior. His hesitation wasn't pride or refusal, but rather a genuine sense that the roles should be reversed. What makes this moment beautiful is that John voices his real confusion, and Jesus will respond by gently explaining that this act serves God's purposes in ways John doesn't yet understand.
