What does Matthew 3:12 mean?
John the Baptist uses this image of harvest and separation to describe what Jesus will do at the end of time. In the ancient world, winnowing was how farmers separated grain from worthless chaff: they'd toss everything in the air, the heavy wheat would fall back down, and the light chaff would blow away. John is saying that Jesus, unlike John himself, will judge all people with perfect clarity, separating those who belong to God's kingdom (the wheat, kept safe) from those who reject him (the chaff, destroyed). It's a sobering reminder that Jesus takes sin seriously, but also a comfort for those trusting in him, because it means he sees truly and his justice is complete. The "unquenchable fire" emphasizes that this separation is final and permanent.
