Matthew 3:11
“I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.”
What does Matthew 3:11 mean?
John the Baptist is being honest about his own limitations while pointing toward something far greater. He's saying his baptism—dunking people in water as a sign of turning from sin—is just the beginning of what God wants to do in people's lives. The real transformation, the deep inner change that actually reconnects us to God, comes through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. That image of not being worthy to carry someone's shoes was a way of saying "I'm not even fit to be this person's servant." John isn't trying to be humble in a false way; he genuinely recognizes that Jesus brings a different kind of power altogether. Water baptism is an outward act we choose, but the Holy Spirit's work goes into the deepest parts of who we are, changing us from the inside out in ways we can't manufacture on our own.
