Matthew 26:7
βa woman came to him having an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table.β
What does Matthew 26:7 mean?
A woman approached Jesus during a meal and did something shocking: she broke open a jar of costly perfumed oil and poured it over his head. This kind of ointment was a luxury item, the sort of thing people saved for important occasions or stored as wealth. Her act was extravagant and public, the kind of thing that would get people talking. In the accounts that follow, we see that some of those watching were upset, feeling the money could have been used for the poor instead. But Jesus defended her, recognizing that her lavish gesture came from deep devotion. There's something beautiful here about loving without calculating the cost, about honoring someone so much that you give generously regardless of what others think.
