Matthew 26:64

Jesus said to him, “You have said it. Nevertheless, I tell you, after this you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of the sky.”

What does Matthew 26:64 mean?

When Jesus is questioned about whether he is the Messiah, he gives an answer that sounds modest on the surface, but carries profound weight. He's essentially saying: yes, you've identified who I am, but what matters most is what comes next. The "right hand of Power" is biblical language for being seated in the place of ultimate authority with God, ruling over all creation. And "coming on the clouds" echoes the prophet Daniel's vision of a divine figure approaching God's throne, suggesting Jesus isn't just claiming to be the Messiah, but announcing his future return as judge. He's telling his accusers that despite standing before them as a prisoner in that moment, he will ultimately reign in glory and return to judge all people. For those listening then, it was either the boldest claim imaginable or absolute blasphemy. For us now, it's an invitation to trust that Jesus's current power might be hidden, but it's ultimately unstoppable, and his return will vindicate everyone who has believed in him.
