What does Matthew 26:63 mean?
Jesus' silence here is profound and deliberate. He's standing before the Sanhedrin during his trial, and when accused, he simply doesn't respond, which infuriates the high priest. The priest then puts Jesus under oath, essentially commanding him to swear by God himself and answer directly: are you the Messiah, the Son of God? This moment captures the weight of what's happening. Jesus has been mostly quiet through his arrest, but now forced to answer under religious oath, he will break his silence in the next verse with a clear "yes." His initial quietness wasn't fear or confusion, though. It was a kind of dignified refusal to engage with a rigged proceeding.
