What does Matthew 26:48 mean?
Judas had arranged a signal with the authorities so they could identify Jesus in the darkness without confusion. A kiss was a normal greeting among friends and rabbis and students, which made it a painfully fitting choice for betrayal, since it mimicked affection while concealing treachery. In that moment, one of Jesus's closest companions used the language of intimacy as a weapon, turning something meant to convey closeness into a tool of arrest.
