What does Matthew 26:47 mean?
In this moment, Jesus is arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the betrayal that has been building throughout the gospels comes to its climax. Judas, who walked alongside Jesus for three years as one of his closest followers, now arrives leading armed men sent by Jerusalem's religious leaders to seize him. The "great multitude" and weapons suggest this was planned as a serious operation, yet something deeply human is happening: one of Jesus's own inner circle is handing him over to his enemies. The detail that Judas arrives "while he was still speaking" captures the vulnerability of that moment. Jesus had just been praying in anguish, and now, before he can even finish speaking, the machinery of his arrest is set in motion.
