What does Matthew 26:43 mean?

Jesus had asked his closest friends to pray with him during one of the most agonizing nights of his life, yet when he returned from praying alone, he found them asleep. The "heavy eyes" here isn't meant as criticism so much as honest observation, that sometimes our bodies simply betray our good intentions. Peter, James, and John wanted to be there for Jesus, but exhaustion won out, and there's something deeply human in that struggle between what we mean to do and what we actually manage. It's a moment that shows even the people closest to Jesus weren't superhuman, and it hints at how alone Jesus felt in his deepest trial.
