“Then he said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch with me.””
What does Matthew 26:38 mean?
Jesus speaks these words in the Garden of Gethsemane just before his arrest, when the weight of what's about to happen presses down on him completely. He's not hiding his fear or his pain, but naming them honestly to his closest friends. When he asks them to stay and watch with him, he's doing what any of us might do in our darkest moments: seeking the comfort of not being alone. This matters because it shows us that Jesus experienced real anguish, not as a distant divine being going through the motions, but as someone who genuinely suffered and needed support. It also teaches us something about suffering itself, that sometimes the deepest pain is eased not by answers or solutions, but simply by the presence of people who care enough to sit with us in it.
