What does Matthew 26:28 mean?
In this moment at his final meal with the disciples, Jesus is telling them that his death would establish a new relationship between God and his people, one based on forgiveness rather than the old system of animal sacrifices. When he says his blood is "poured out for many," he's describing his coming crucifixion as a sacrifice that would take away the guilt and consequence of sin for all who receive it. This wasn't a punishment he deserved, but a gift he chose to give so that people could be freed from the weight of their wrongdoing and restored to God.
