What does Matthew 25:39 mean?
The righteous in this passage are genuinely confused, asking Jesus when they ever helped him in his suffering. They're not being modest or fishing for compliments, but rather expressing real surprise that their ordinary acts of kindness—visiting a sick neighbor, bringing food to someone locked up—somehow counted as serving Jesus himself. He's telling them that when we extend care to people in their lowest moments, we're actually encountering him there, even if we never realized it at the time.
