Matthew 25:38
βWhen did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you?β
What does Matthew 25:38 mean?
Jesus is speaking here through a parable about the final judgment, and he's putting words in the mouths of the righteous who are confused about their own goodness. They're asking when they ever saw him homeless or without clothes and actually helped him. The honest bewilderment in their question is the whole point: they didn't realize they were serving Jesus when they showed kindness to vulnerable people around them. It's Jesus's way of saying that caring for the forgotten and struggling people in our world is caring for him, whether we're thinking about him in that moment or not. The passage invites us to see dignity and Christ's presence in people we might otherwise overlook.
