Matthew 24:9
“Then they will deliver you up to oppression, and will kill you. You will be hated by all of the nations for my name’s sake.”
What does Matthew 24:9 mean?
Jesus is telling his followers what will happen when they openly identify with him and his message. He's being honest about the cost of faith, not trying to comfort them with false promises of an easy path. This warning came true throughout history—believers faced rejection, persecution, and even death in many places. Jesus isn't saying this will happen to everyone everywhere, but rather preparing his followers for the real possibility that choosing him might mean suffering, especially in hostile environments. He wants them to go in with open eyes rather than being blindsided by hardship. If you're facing opposition or difficulty because of your faith, or if you're worried about what faith might cost you, this verse acknowledges that struggle is real. At the same time, Jesus doesn't stop here—he goes on to promise that God remains with his people through persecution. The point is both honest and hopeful: following Jesus is sometimes costly, but you're never abandoned in that cost.
