Matthew 24:2
“But he answered them, “You see all of these things, don’t you? Most certainly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone on another, that will not be thrown down.””
What does Matthew 24:2 mean?
Jesus is responding to his disciples' wonder at the temple's massive stone construction by telling them that none of it will last. Within about 40 years, Roman soldiers would destroy Jerusalem's temple completely, fulfilling this prediction. Beyond the historical fact, Jesus is pointing to something deeper: earthly structures, institutions, and human power systems, no matter how impressive or permanent they seem, are temporary. What endures isn't made of stone. For people going through loss or watching their familiar world shift, this can be both unsettling and strangely comforting, because it reminds us that our security shouldn't rest in what we can see and touch, but in realities that can't be shaken.
