What does Matthew 23:24 mean?
Jesus is calling out the religious leaders of his time for a backwards kind of perfectionism. They were meticulously careful about minor details of the law (like straining their drink so they wouldn't accidentally swallow a tiny insect), yet they completely missed the weightier matters like justice, mercy, and honesty. It's a vivid image meant to sting: they were obsessing over gnats while camels went down whole. This hits at something many of us recognize in ourselves, maybe especially in harder seasons when we're anxious or controlling. We can get so focused on small rules or fears that we lose sight of what actually matters, and we might even use those small things to feel superior to others. Jesus is inviting his listeners toward a different way of thinking, one that gets the big picture right first.
