What does Matthew 23:17 mean?

Jesus is calling out the religious leaders for getting their priorities completely backward. They've been teaching people that swearing by the gold in the temple is more binding than swearing by the temple itself, which makes no sense: the temple is what makes the gold sacred in the first place, not the other way around. This is part of a larger pattern where these leaders have tangled up the rules so badly that people have lost sight of what actually matters. Jesus is essentially asking them to think clearly about what deserves honor and respect. When we focus on technicalities or material things instead of the sacred purpose they're meant to serve, we miss the whole point. His sharp words here are meant to wake them up to how twisted their thinking has become.
