What does Matthew 22:31 mean?
Jesus is reminding the Sadducees (who didn't believe in an afterlife) that the scriptures they themselves claimed to follow actually teach about resurrection. He's pointing them back to words God spoke long ago, words they had access to but apparently hadn't really grasped. By asking "haven't you read," he's gently challenging them to reconsider what they thought they knew. The implication is that resurrection isn't some new or strange idea, but something woven into God's own words all along.
