“For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like God’s angels in heaven.”
What does Matthew 22:30 mean?
Jesus is responding to a question about marriage in the afterlife, and he's telling us something surprising: our relationships will be fundamentally different in heaven than they are now. The bonds of marriage, as we know them on earth, won't continue in the same way because our entire existence will be transformed, similar to how angels exist in God's presence without needing the kinds of earthly connections we do. This doesn't mean relationships lose their value or that what we share with loved ones doesn't matter. Rather, it suggests that in resurrection life, we'll be so completely fulfilled in God's presence that we won't need marriage to meet our deepest needs for connection and belonging. The comparison to angels points to a reality that's hard to imagine from where we are now, but it's meant to comfort us that whatever comes next is designed perfectly for who we'll be then, not who we are now.
