“Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.’”
What does Matthew 22:13 mean?
Jesus tells this parable to show what happens when someone tries to enter God's kingdom without genuine commitment or transformation. The "outer darkness" isn't about physical location but represents separation from God's presence and the deep regret that comes with it, "weeping and grinding of teeth" being expressions of anguish and despair. The harsh language reflects Jesus's serious point: being invited to relationship with God is an incredible privilege, but it requires actually accepting the invitation on God's terms, not showing up unprepared and halfhearted. This isn't meant to terrify you into faith, but rather to awaken us to how much this matters and to take seriously what we say yes to when we claim to follow Christ.
