What does Matthew 21:25 mean?
Jesus is cornering the religious leaders with a simple question that exposes their real problem. He's asking whether John the Baptist's authority came from God or from human sources, and the leaders find themselves trapped. If they admit John's baptism was from God, they'd have to explain why they rejected John's message, and Jesus would catch them in hypocrisy. If they say it came from humans, they risk angering the crowds who believed John was a prophet. This moment shows how fear and self-protection can paralyze us into silence. The leaders care more about saving face and keeping their power than about honestly seeking truth. Jesus is inviting them (and us) to consider that refusing to answer a hard question is itself a kind of answer, one that reveals what we truly value. Sometimes the hardest step toward faith is simply being willing to follow the light wherever it leads, even when it costs us something.
