What does Matthew 21:24 mean?
When religious leaders challenged Jesus about where his authority came from, he didn't answer directly. Instead, he asked them about John the Baptist's authority, essentially saying "answer my question first, and then I'll answer yours." It's a clever move that puts them in an impossible position, since they had to choose between admitting John was from God or facing the crowd who believed in him. But there's something deeper here too. Jesus wasn't just being evasive or playing games. He was inviting them to think about what they actually believed and why. Sometimes the best way forward isn't giving someone an answer they're not ready for, but helping them examine their own hearts first. If they could be honest about John, they might be ready to be honest about Jesus himself.
