What does Matthew 20:4 mean?

The landowner in this parable keeps hiring workers throughout the day, even those standing idle in the marketplace late in the afternoon. He's offering them fair wages without haggling over terms, simply asking them to trust his goodness. There's something deeply reassuring here about God's character: he doesn't turn people away for arriving late to faith, to service, or to the work of his kingdom. Those who feel they've wasted years or made late starts can trust that "whatever is right" means the owner keeps his word and honors those who show up willing to work, regardless of the hour.
