What does Matthew 20:3 mean?
The landowner in this parable returns to town in the mid-morning (around 9 a.m.) and notices workers just standing around with nothing to do. In that economy, daily laborers depended entirely on being hired each day to feed their families, so idleness meant real hardship. What makes this detail striking is that the landowner doesn't blame these people for being lazy—he simply asks why they're standing there unemployed, and they reply that no one has hired them yet. The point of the parable becomes clearer through this observation: the owner is unusually generous and fair-minded, willing to hire workers even late in the day, even those who had fewer opportunities to find work than others.
